How To Reduce Inflammation In The Body

What Is Inflammation and Chronic Inflammation?

Did you know that most of the time, inflammation is actually a good thing?  It’s a natural protective response from your body to fight off something that it sees as potentially harmful to your body.

The thing that your body identifies as dangerous is usually a virus, bacteria, infection or an irritant of some kind. Foreign objects can also trigger this response as well as damaged cells and pathogens.

When your body identifies something that it is concerned about, the tiny blood vessels around the affected tissue will dilate, widen and increase the blood flow.  Chemicals and white blood cells are released into your system. The permeability of the tissue is also increased to allow more blood cells, blood protein and other fluids to rush to the tissue to help fight the problem.

Elbow Inflammation

All of this fluid that is now in the area is what causes the inflamed area to swell.

If the swelling is bad enough to bother the nerves in the area, it can cause pain.

Although there can be pain and discomfort involved, the increase of these fluids to the area are a good thing.  They start working to consume the foreign bacteria or to start clotting (if there is bleeding).

The increase of the blood supply in the affected area will also typically cause heat.

In most cases, inflammation is the beginning of the healing process. However, sometimes it goes too far and can actually start causing damage.

If your body takes this process too far, the white blood cells and chemicals can start damaging your body. This is when you can really start having problems and it becomes important for you to know how to reduce inflammation in the body. We will talk more about that below.

Two Types of Inflammation

There are two types of inflammation, acute inflammation or chronic inflammation.

  • Acute inflammation is the kind that is typically associated with a specific injury. (ingrown toenail, sprained ankle, etc)  This is usually a short term process, it appears quickly and it goes away when the problem is either removed or healed.

  • Chronic inflammation is a much bigger issue for most people. It leads to an ongoing shift in the type of cells that are present at the point of inflammation. This is distinguished by the healing of the tissue and it’s destruction at the same time.  Most people who are searching for an inflammation treatment to reduce inflammation are concerned about this type.

Inflammation Symptoms

Most people have experienced inflammation of some kind before so these symptoms are familiar.

  • Pain – caused by release of chemicals that stimulate nerve ending
  • Warmth – caused by increased blood flow
  • Redness – caused by increased blood flow
  • Swelling – caused by accumulation of fluid

These symptoms are almost always present when the acute inflammation occurs on the surface of the body.  Some of the lesser known symptoms are joint stiffness, loss of function, fever, chills, fatigue, headaches and loss of appetite. Some of the more well known inflammation treatments for these types of issues include ice and compression of the area.

However, internal inflammation may not always show the same signs. Here are some examples of internal inflammation:

  • Inflammation of the heart (myocarditis)
  • Inflammation of the tubes transporting air to the lungs can lead to asthma attack
  • Inflammation of the large intestine (colitis) – diarrhea, cramps
  • Inflammation of kidneys (nephritis) – high blood pressure, kidney failure

Since many of your organs don’t have very many pain sensitive nerves, pain is NOT usually a primary symptom of internal inflammation.

Inflammation Related Diseases

Sometimes the body sets off a false alarm. It triggers this inflammation response even though there are no problems that it needs to fight off. If this occurs, your immune system may actually cause damage to your own body.

Problems with ongoing chronic inflammation engulf a very large, apparently unrelated group of disorders whose only connection is chronic inflammation.  Many (but not all) of these potential diseases are related to your immune system.

  • Allergic reactions
  • Myopathies
  • Immune system disorders
  • Cancer
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Some types of heart disease.
  • Arthritis – caused by misdirected inflammation
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Gouty arthritis
  • Bursitis/tendonitis
  • Polymyglia rheumatica)
  • Acne vulgaris
  • Asthma
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Chronic prostatitis
  • Glomerulonephritis
  • Hypersensitivities
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Reperfusion injry
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

You can see that learning how to reduce inflammation in the body is a critical piece to your health plan.
